Restoration   Recent Work
Wonham House, Bampton, Devon.

The project comprised the replacement of existing defective felt covered flat roofs with a series of linked plain tiled roofs.

The original Victorian house (constructed 275 metres above and commanding extensive views of the River Exe) had originally been built in the ‘Norman Shaw’ tradition with a pargetted and jettied second floor attic storey.

Unfortunately previous owners had demolished the north wing and it’s chapel and had removed the attic roof leaving in its place a poorly constructed and very leaky flat roof.

Its replacement with a pitched roof solved the immediate leakage problem and enabled the provision of two additional bedrooms, a bathroom and a large open room designed to accommodate a future billiard table.

The magnificent open staircase was sympathetically extended to serve the new second floor completing the Victorian ethos of the house.
